Kendriya Vidyalaya students don't like to be snooped

The students and teachers of Kendriya Vidyalaya No 1, Kozhikode, seems to be an adamant lot. They have been protesting in front of the principal's office demanding the removal of closed circuit television cameras ( CCTV) in the school and the reinstatement of suspended teachers.

On Monday, district collector P B Salim, who is also the chairman of the school, had issued orders to remove the CCTVs from the school. But the students did not stop their protests as the decision to revoke the suspension of teachers was not announced by Kendriya Vidyalaya, Chennai Centre.

The students had taken the protest path after the school reopened after pooja holidays. They argue that the CCTVs were installed in the school without consulting the teachers and the students. A teacher in school said that the principal Maya George had sought permission to install cameras in computer labs. "But it was installed even near the toilets. No cameras were put up in the computer lab," the teacher said.

The All Kerala Kendriya Vidyalaya Teachers' Association resented the move. In a letter to the principal, the teachers declined to engage in overtime duties until the cameras were removed. But the principal was reluctant to act.

The situation worsened when the assistant commissioner of Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS) who was inspecting the school suspended five office-bearers of the association. The teachers had stayed away from a meeting convened by the official after school hours.

Protesting students say that Rs 1.5 lakh was spent from the school development fund to install the cameras. "Using our own contributions, the principal is trying to unnecessarily invade our privacy," a student said.

Meanwhile the collector has said that the suspension of five teachers could be considered only after an investigation by the joint commissioner of KVS.
