The country may have made giant strides in the field of information technology in the last decade, but the directorate of education (DoE) in Delhi has no rules or guidelines when it comes to recruiting computer science teachers.
This fact came to light when DoE admitted before Delhi high court that there was an absence of clear-cut rules for recruiting computer science teachers. This prompted the HC to fix a 10-week deadline for DoE to frame rules.
"I am aghast to learn that in spite of an emphasis in the last 10 years, if not earlier, on the need to educate school children in computer science, DoE has not bothered to even frame the rules that decide how computer science teachers are recruited," said Justice Rajiv Sahai Endlaw while hearing a plea of one such teacher whose appointment to a school was not cleared by the directorate.
"This also leads one to believe that computer science is not being taught in DoE schools. It amounts to depriving the students from pursuing a career in computer science in as much as without the students having studied computers in school, they will not be considered for admission into graduate courses in the said subject."
Justice Endlaw was hearing a petition filed by one Neerja Jain through her counsel R K Saini.
